SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Senior Citizens Center of Saratoga Springs is getting a facelift with the help of some local businesses and a large network of volunteers. Lois Celeste, the center’s new executive director, is only two months into her tenure but she has already set in motion plans for major renovations and technology upgrades. She said she hopes to make the building presentable, warm and a place people want to be, and the paint job done by Rebuilding Together Saturday was another step in the right direction.

Senior Citizen Center of Saratoga Springs looking for volunteers to help with renovation project

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Senior Citizen Center of Saratoga Springs is looking for volunteers to help with a full slate of projects that includes a complete interior renovation of its Williams Street facility. “It’s a great building and we want people to come in and use it,” Executive Director Lois Celeste said.
Celeste has secured $2,500 from Rebuilding Together Saratoga for paint, and a crew from the group will be at the center this Saturday to begin the renovation. The funds were required as a matching donation for a $10,000 grant from the Saratoga County Department of the Aging for replacement carpets and other projects.
Between 75 and 80 new members have joined the center since the addition of extended programming hours in August, many of whom are returning from a lapse in membership. Members must be at least 50 years old and pay a $15 annual membership fee.
In addition to renovation projects, the center is also seeking additional funding and volunteers to work throughout the week for art and wellness programs. For more information, go to www.saratogaseniorcenter.org, call 584-1621 or e-mail

Letter: Larkin has served community well

On the Sunday, Sept. 19, opinion page there was a letter written by Michelle Larkin, executive director of Rebuilding Together Saratoga County, thanking the various sponsors and numerous volunteers who work with Rebuilding Together.
What Michelle couldn’t say but should be said is that she deserves sincere thanks from our community. Seven years ago she initiated the idea of a county organization to affiliate with the national body. In those seven years, this infant organization has grown to be a thriving, successful one which has benefitted many members of our community. Its growth has been fantastic and is due in large part to Michelle’s initiative, efforts, organizational skills and a personal touch which encourages people to participate.
So, Michelle, many, many thanks to you from our community. You’ve done us proud!

The 2010 Showcase of Homes is nearly upon us! Coordinated by the Saratoga Builders Association, this year’s Showcase of Homes will be spectacular and is indeed the largest ever in its 15-year history. There are 16 homes from 15 builders on display in Saratoga County. You’ll need to plan for more than one day if you want to see all these magnificent homes. Tickets for the Showcase of Homes are $20 each and are good for all six days.
